I used to add a necklace, a scarf, a brooch — this jumper arrives already finished

A jumper where the collar does all the work — that's what this turned out to be. I'm 67, and my routine before leaving the house has always had a fiddly final act: a plain jumper needs something, so out come the necklaces, the scarves, the brooch from my mother, and five minutes of standing at the mirror not quite convinced by any of them.

What I wanted was a jumper that walked out of the wardrobe already finished.

The collar is the finishing touch, built in.
