Every coat I own is sensible and dark — this scarf is where the colour lives now

The one bright thing over a dark coat — that's what this is. I'm 67, and my coat rack is a row of sensible decisions: black, navy, dark green. Nothing wrong with any of them, except that from November to March I dress like I'm attending a very long funeral, and my face sits on top of it all looking as grey as the sky.

What I wanted was colour I could add in one movement, without buying a red coat I'd regret.

It has since gone over every coat I own, been borrowed twice at a coffee morning and returned reluctantly, and my granddaughter has already announced what she wants for Christmas. I may have to buy the blue one to keep the peace. It was £19.95 in the sale, half the usual £40.
