My Garden, Worn Through Winter

Real stories · My garden, worn through winter

My garden dies in November — this blouse politely disagrees

My garden, worn straight through winter — that's what this blouse has turned out to be, and every gardener will understand why that matters. There's a long grey wait between the last dahlia and the first snowdrop. The garden goes to sleep, and somehow the wardrobe goes with it: everything plain, everything practical, everything the colour of weather.

I didn't need another sensible top. I needed something in flower.

Then I found the Ferelinne from a British label called York Boutique — a soft, relaxed blouse covered in a delicate botanical print: trailing vines, little leaves, and tiny dragonflies hovering between them, with a prettily trimmed V-neck and buttons down the front. There's a pink and a green as well as my purple.

The print does all the work. Because the pattern is the interest, the rest of the outfit can be entirely plain — navy trousers, a grey cardigan — and it still reads as dressed with intention, which is why getting dressed got faster AND nicer at the same time. And the relaxed cut asks nothing of me between breakfast and bed.

Vines, leaves and little dragonflies doing all the work — which is why a plain-trousers morning now leaves the house looking like a considered decision.

It was £34.95 in the sale — half the usual £70 — and I did check I could send it back if it disappointed in person: a fortnight, free delivery. It didn't. It's been in rotation three times a week since, and it washes beautifully.

At the garden club, Margaret studied the print the way she studies a plant catalogue, identified everything in it — 'honeysuckle, that is' — and then asked where it was from. From Margaret, who has opinions about botanical accuracy, that is the highest honour available.
