Half my wardrobe was 'nice but unfinished' — one jacket finished the lot

The jacket that finishes every outfit I own — that's what this turned out to be. I'm 67, and my wardrobe's quiet problem was never the clothes; it was the last five per cent. A nice top and trousers that somehow still read as 'pottering', a dress that needed something over it and never had the right something. Nice, but unfinished.

What I wanted was one thing to put on top that made everything underneath look deliberate.

It has since done a garden-centre coffee, a birthday lunch and one ordinary Thursday that looked far better dressed than it was, and at the lunch Sandra asked if I'd 'had a sort-out'. I have not. I've had a jacket.
