Warm All Night, Without The Weight

Real stories · Warm all night, without the weight

Under the heavy winter duvet I'd boil, kick it off and wake up frozen at three

Warm all night, without a heavy duvet pressing down on me — I hadn't slept like that in years. I'm 67, and winter nights had become a battle: under the thick winter duvet I'd overheat, kick it off, and wake at three in the morning frozen, fumbling for it in the dark. Malcolm says I spend half the night doing the hokey-cokey with the bedding.

What I wanted was something warm enough for a cold bedroom that didn't trap all the heat.

Over the light summer duvet — and Winnie has already claimed the bottom corner.

Then I found the Lunareth from a British label called York Boutique — a quilted throw covered in nine panels of sleeping cats, each one like a little portrait, inside an old-fashioned floral border. It comes in four sizes, and I chose the big double-bed one.

It's lightweight, warm in the cold months and yet breathable — which is why, laid over a light summer duvet, it keeps me cosy without the boil-and-freeze routine. The quilting and reinforced stitched edges help it stay put on the bed instead of sliding off in the night, it's reversible, and it washes well.

Light and warm, yet breathable — which is why I sleep through under it instead of boiling, kicking it all off and waking up frozen.

Folded on the blanket box by day — the hot-water bottle hardly gets a look-in now.

The double-bed size is £34.95 instead of £70, and the lap size starts at £19.95 — half price either way, and a good deal less than a new winter duvet.

It has done three weeks of cold nights and one proper frost, and I've slept through nearly every one of them. Winnie has claimed the bottom corner, and Malcolm, who sleeps like a radiator, has stopped complaining that my side of the bed is 'a furnace'. I did check before ordering that I could send it back if it didn't suit — you can, within a fortnight, and the delivery's free.

If winter nights have you boiling and freezing too, do have a look. The Lunareth is rated 4.8 out of 5 by more than 320 people, it comes in four sizes from a lap throw to double-bed size — and the bigger sizes go first before Christmas.
