Malcolm's old cap was a public embarrassment — replacing it took diplomacy and this

A new cap that looks like an old friend — that's the only kind Malcolm would ever accept, and it took me years to find one. Every married woman knows a version of The Cap: his was fifteen years old, shapeless, a colour with no name left, and glued to his head from October to April. I'd hidden it twice. It came back twice, like a homing pigeon.

The problem with replacing it was never the cap. It's that new caps look NEW — stiff, shiny, sitting on his head like a traffic cone. He'd wear one to the end of the drive and retire it.

The relic has been quietly moved to the shed, where it now keeps the spiders warm. Everyone's happy — and his brother has already tried the new one on. I've been instructed to 'sort him one for Christmas'. Sorted.
