The Blanket Winnie Tried To Steal

Nine sleeping cats, one warm lap, and a dog with strong opinions about whose blanket it is. That's been my week, and I regret nothing.

Every winter I fight the same small war: the evenings get dark at four, the sitting room never feels quite warm enough, and every throw we own is either thin and useless or so enormous it swallows the sofa. I'd been after one proper lap blanket — warm, pretty, the right size — for about three winters.

Then I found the Lunareth on York Boutique's site, a British label I order from anyway, and it stopped me mid-scroll: a quilted throw with nine panels of sleeping cats — each one painted like a little portrait, every whisker in place — inside an old-fashioned floral border. It looks like something you'd find at a very good craft fair and pay a fortune for.

The detail up close — every one of the nine has its own little face.

In the hand it's better than the pictures: smooth and quilted with proper stitching through it and reinforced edges, which is why it drapes heavy and warm over your knees instead of sliding off like the thin ones do. It's reversible, it washes well, and it comes in four sizes — from a lap size up to one big enough for a double bed.

Nine cats asleep on my lap, and not one of them needs feeding.

Me, the cats and a cup of tea at about half past four in the afternoon. Winter can do its worst.

Prices start at £19.95 for the lap size — half the listed £40 — because York Boutique sell direct with no middleman; even the big 150-by-200 one is £34.95 instead of £70. I'll admit I checked before ordering that I could send it back if the printing looked cheap — you can, within a fortnight, with free delivery — but the artwork is the best thing about it.

And the dog? Winnie took one look, decided nine painted cats were no threat, and claimed it as her own. I now share a blanket with a terrier. My friend Sandra (cat-mad, as you may remember) saw it, said nothing, and a parcel arrived at her house on Thursday.

The thief herself. Asleep on nine cats without a flicker of irony.

If your evenings look like mine — dark early, telly on, feet up — this is the cosiest £19.95 you'll spend this winter. And for the cat lover in your life, it's a Christmas present that needs no thought at all.
