The Dress Sandra Called A Painting

A dress like a painting, with pockets — and it works in winter with boots and a cardigan. I didn't think all of that existed in one garment either.

Somewhere along the way my wardrobe went beige. Not on purpose — it just happens, one sensible purchase at a time, until one grey morning you catch yourself in the mirror looking like the weather. I'm 67, not invisible, and this winter I decided the two would stop being the same thing.

The Vintessa is from York Boutique, a British label I order from often: a V-neck midi dress covered in an abstract print — blues and violets with sweeps of gold, like someone had a lovely afternoon with a paintbrush. And it has proper side pockets, because whoever designed it actually wears dresses.

Close-up of the Vintessa print
The print up close — this is the bit Sandra leaned in to look at.

The cut is the quiet success: a relaxed fit that moves with you rather than clinging, and a V-neck that keeps the whole thing feminine, which is why something this colourful still reads elegant rather than loud. In winter I wear it exactly as the label suggests — black tights, ankle boots, a long cardigan — and it's as warm an outfit as any trousers I own.

"That's not a dress, that's a painting," said Sandra. I've been paid worse compliments.
Janet wearing the Vintessa dress
Me in mine, winter edition: tights, boots, cardigan, and not a scrap of beige.

It's listed at £80 and sells for £39.95 — less than half — because York Boutique sell direct from their own site with no middleman. There are three colourways (I have the blue; the khaki is next) in sizes UK 8/10 up to 18/20.

At the café on Thursday it did what the beige years never once did: started a conversation. Sandra called it a painting, the waitress asked where it was from, and I left feeling ten feet tall. I'll admit I did check before ordering that I could send it back if the print was gaudy in person — you can, within a fortnight, with free delivery — but it's lovelier in person, not less.

The Vintessa laid out as a winter outfit
The winter recipe, laid out: dress, tights, boots, cardigan. Done.

If your wardrobe has quietly gone the colour of the pavement too — this is the one I'd start with. The middle sizes go first in their sales, so don't dither.
