The Dress That Looks Inherited
It looks like something wonderful I inherited — the sort of dress people assume has a story. It arrived in the post on a Tuesday, but I see no reason to tell anyone that.
Most new clothes look new. That's rather the problem with them. They look like this season, like everyone else's, like the shop window. What I've always coveted are the pieces that look found: the vintage print, the colours that don't quite exist anymore, the dress that makes people ask 'where on EARTH did you get that?'
The Veloraine, from York Boutique — a British label I order from often — is exactly that dress. A long, flowing maxi covered in a vintage floral print: deep greens, soft reds, old golds, like wallpaper from a beautiful house in 1935. Three-quarter sleeves, a gentle V-neck, ankle length. Nothing about it says 2026, which is precisely the point.
It earns its keep in winter, too. The fabric is soft and light and the cut is loose and flowing, which is why it layers so easily — black cardigan over it, thick tights and ankle boots under it, and you're warm, covered and considerably more interesting than the weather. The print carries the whole outfit; I've stopped even thinking about jewellery with it.
'Where on earth did you get that?' — asked twice in one afternoon, answered vaguely both times.
It's listed at £60 and sells for £29.95 because York Boutique sell direct with no middleman. I'll admit I did check before ordering that I could send it back if the print was less lovely in person — you can, within a fortnight, and the delivery's free — but it's lovelier: the colours are softer and deeper than the photos manage.
It comes in sizes UK 8/10 to 18/20. If you've always coveted the clothes that look found rather than bought — here's one you can simply order.
