The Jumper I Haven't Taken Off Since

The Jumper I Haven't Taken Off Since

Warm without the bulk — that's all I ask of a jumper now the heating's on, and it took me until this winter to actually find one.

I feel the cold more than I used to, there's no pretending otherwise. By October I'm the woman with a cardigan over a jumper over a vest, shuffling about the house like a duvet with legs. And the jumpers in the shops don't help: the warm ones are so thick and shapeless you lose yourself in them, and the nice-looking ones are thin as paper. Malcolm keeps a firm hand on the thermostat, so the jumper matters.

The Melarien turned up in my life the usual way — I'd ordered a blouse from York Boutique, a British label that sells direct from its own site, and saw it while I was there. Navy, ribbed, with a little row of buttons at the neck and down the sides. I added it to the order without much hope.

Mine on the wardrobe door — the buttons at the neck are what lift it out of ordinary.

It is, hands down, the cosiest thing I own that still looks like clothes. The knit is ribbed and soft with proper give to it, and the cut is relaxed without being baggy — which is why it holds the warmth in without hugging you anywhere you'd rather it didn't. I could have cried with relief the first properly cold morning I had it on: warm, and still shaped like a person.

Warm, and still shaped like a person. That shouldn't be rare, but it is.

Me in mine on a grey afternoon — this is where you'll find me until roughly April.

On price: it's listed at £60 and sells for £29.95, because there's no shop and no middleman in between. For something I've worn more or less daily since it arrived, that works out at pennies a wear — that's how I justified ordering the wine red as well, anyway.

I wore it to the garden centre café with Sandra last week and she asked, slightly accusingly, why I looked "so put together for a Tuesday". I'll admit I did check before ordering that I could send it back if it didn't suit — you can, within a fortnight, and the delivery's free — which settled it for me.

Off duty on the armchair — though never for long.

It comes in six colours — sky blue, navy, wine red, army green, brown and black — in sizes UK 8/10 up to UK 18/20. The middle sizes always go first in their sales, so don't sit on it the way I nearly did.

If you're already dreading the long cold stretch ahead: this is my honest answer to it. One soft jumper fixed my mornings; I can't put it better than that.
