The Little Necklace That Made Sandra Cry

For the cat lover in your life: a tiny silver someone, hugging a little rose-gold cat. I gave one to my friend Sandra last week and she went quiet, and then she didn't.

Anyone who knows Sandra knows Tibbs. He's a large, opinionated ginger tom who has run her household for twelve years, and she talks about him the way other people talk about their grandchildren. Buying for her has always stumped me — she has everything, wants nothing, and waves you off if you spend money on her.

Then I saw the Aurelith on York Boutique's site, a British label I order from anyway: a little polished silver figure sitting with its arms wrapped around a rose-gold cat, on a fine silver chain. It's them, I thought. It's Sandra and Tibbs. It was £24.95, so I didn't deliberate for long.

The Aurelith cat necklace in its gift box
Sandra's, boxed up and ready. It arrives looking like a proper present, which helps.

In the hand it's lovely — small and light, nicely polished, with the little cat picked out in that warm rose-gold against the silver, which is why it reads instantly, even across a table: someone who loves their cat. It's not costume-jewellery flimsy, and it's not fussy either. It just sits right, a touch below the collarbone.

She looked at it, looked at me, and said: "It's us, isn't it." And that was that.

I'll confess: I liked it so much I kept one back for myself. This is it on — it sits just below the collarbone.

When I gave Sandra hers she did the thing where she opens the box, goes very still, and then has to find a tissue and pretend it's a cold. Twelve years of Tibbs, in one small pendant. I have honestly never had a gift land like it, certainly not for £24.95 — it's listed at £50, but York Boutique sell direct with no middleman, so it's half that.

I'll admit I checked before ordering that I could send it back if it looked cheap in person — you can, within a fortnight, and the delivery's free — but it went straight from the box to her neck and hasn't been off since, as far as I can tell.

The Aurelith necklace in the palm of a hand
Small, light, and the rose-gold cat is what makes it — you can see the hug from across the room.

It comes in two finishes, and with Christmas on the horizon I'd say this quietly: if there's a cat person in your life — a daughter, a sister, a friend like my Sandra — this is the easiest meaningful gift you'll find this year. Order it before the gift-giving rush empties the shelf.
