The Shoes I Never Bend Down For

The Shoes I Never Bend Down For

On in a second, no bending, and comfortable from the school-run hour to teatime. That was the whole wish list — and I've finally found the shoe that does all three.

Nobody warns you that one day the hallway becomes the hardest room in the house. Laces, buckles, that one-legged hop with a shoehorn while the taxi waits — my back has opinions about all of it now. Most days I'd been giving up and wearing the same tired old pair simply because they were the easiest to get into.

Then I found the Avenirae on York Boutique's site — a British label I order from often. It's a soft moccasin-style slip-on with a little bow, proper stitching around the toe, and the bit that sold me: real orthopedic support built into a cushioned footbed.

The cushioned insole of the Avenirae
The inside is the secret — soft, cushioned and genuinely supportive.

They go on standing up, in a second, no hands — the back is firm enough that it never folds under your heel, which is why there's no hallway hop anymore. And once they're on, the cushioning and the gentle support mean my feet are simply… fine. All day. Light, breathable, with a flexible rubber sole that grips nicely on damp pavements.

On in a second, standing up, no hands. The hallway hop is over.

Me on the hallway bench — though the point is, I don't actually need to sit down for these.

They're listed at £70 and sell for £34.95 — less than half — because York Boutique sell direct from their own website with no middleman. I paused at the price all the same; then I counted how many days a week I'd wear them (seven) and stopped pausing.

I wore them to the garden centre with Margaret, who watched me step into them at the front door and said, with narrowed eyes, "do those come in beige?" They do — and pink and brown — in UK sizes 3.5 to 9. I'll admit I checked before ordering that I could send them back if they pinched — you can, within a fortnight, with free delivery — but they fit true to size straight out of the box.

Where they live: by the door, ready to go when I am.

If your hallway has become a small daily battle too — this is the pair I'd point you to. Comfortable, tidy-looking, and never once a bend.
