Layering looks expensive on other women and lumpy on me — this set did the layering for me

The outfit that comes pre-layered — that's what this is. I'm 67, and I've concluded that layering is a skill I simply wasn't issued. On other women it looks expensive and effortless; when I stack my own knits, something always bunches, rides up, or adds a stone. So every winter I retreat to jumper-and-trousers and look, in Malcolm's kind words, 'perfectly fine'.

What I wanted was the layered look with none of the layering decisions.

Then I found the Velarienne from a British label called York Boutique — a two-piece knitted winter set, and I chose the taupe: a boxy little roll-neck that sits over a long knitted column underneath.

The cleverness is that the two pieces are cut for each other. The cropped roll-neck ends exactly where the long knit takes over, which is why the layers sit flat and look styled instead of bunching — the proportions were decided by someone who knew what they were doing, not by me at 7am. The long line underneath lengthens everything, the roll-neck keeps the warmth where you lose it, and because it's all one soft knit family, it's genuinely warm without a hint of bulk. One hanger, whole outfit.

At £44.95 I hesitated a day — then did the arithmetic: it's two pieces, so call it £22.50 each, and it quietly replaced a jumper, a skirt and the ten-minute deliberation in front of the wardrobe. And with a fortnight to send it back and free delivery, the hesitating was the only cost.

It has since done a birthday lunch, church, and an afternoon tea where Sandra asked if I'd 'been styled'. I said yes. I didn't say by whom. It was £44.95 in the sale, half the usual £90.
